On April 21st 2007 W.P. Puppet Theatre Society put out a call out to all puppets and puppet-supporters to gather. The press release explained why:
Calgary Puppets to Post the First Rights Manifesto in Their Entertaining History
The manifesto will highlight the plight of puppets. Often considered to be purely entertaining creatures, the puppets will be lobbying for recognition and fair treatment. “We, the puppets of Calgary and our puppeteer friends and supporters, are seeking acknowledgement of our role and our achievements in this society,” recently commented one particularly fuzzy puppet who goes by the name of Blueberry and seems to be the ring leader of this endeavour….
The puppets were thrilled when Alderman Joe Ceci, a long time supporter of the socially significant work local puppets carry out, responded with the Mayors proclamation of Annual Puppetry Day for April 21st.
So what will we do for April 21st 2007?

Puppet Manifesto
Whereas a manifesto is simply defined as “a public declaration of the purpose, principles, or plan of action of a group or individual”
The Puppets declare on this 21st day of April 2007 in the City of Calgary, Alberta, CANADA:
- Puppets have the Right to Intelligent Thought and Free Speech:
- Stuffed head puppets need to be created with better, more intelligent fibrefill.
- Wooden Headed puppets must have cavities carved to provide room for thought.
- Words should not be put in our mouths for the sole purpose of frivolous entertainment.
- Puppets have the Right to Independent Movement:
- The strings of Marionettes should be cut
- The rods of Rod Puppets need to be broken
- The hands in Hand Puppets need to be removed!
- None of us are Free till allof us are Free!
- Puppets have the Right to Comfortable and Affordable Housing:
- A dusty crate is not a house
- A green garbage bag is not a house
- A two year olds bedroom is neither safe nor agreeable
- Hanging around upside down is only okay in Australia!
- Puppets have the right to Safe Passage through Puppet Life:
- Puppets are not slaves and will not be held in servitude.
- The aforementioned two year old tries to eat our eyeballs – this is not acceptable
- The practice of giving us to Dogs and Cats for the purpose of chewing, shredding, spindling and other un-mentionable activities - is not acceptable!
- Puppets Reputations:
- The term ‘puppet’ is maligned when applied to politicians, CEO’s et al.. A puppet follows a strict definition of being – which first and foremost excludes Homo Sapian tendencies. We take back the name and say, “We are proud to be puppets”.
Signed by the undersigned on behalf of All Puppets
