FINDING MY SONG: BY BIRD
Finding My Song: By Bird is a story told by the Paper Bird Lady who sells paper birds on a corner
by an old cathedral. The tale she weaves follows the framework of a traditional folktale. Bird’s story,
the tale of a bird who has lost her song and unknowingly embarks on a journey of self-discovery to
find it, includes many other characters that help or sometimes hinder her search. The bird’s search
is mirrored by a mouse who dreams of flying and a choirmaster looking for inspiration. As in a fable there
are messages in the stories of all the characters, for those who want to find them.
Finding My Song: By Bird is a fifty minute live theatre production for family audiences. It utilizes
a paper aesthetic for the puppet designs and set. Two actors manipulate a multitude of puppets as well
as play the parts of the Paper Bird Lady and Mr. Zlativ, the Choirmaster. Original music underscores the
live voices and a movie projects onto a large screen which is integrated into the set. The imagery in
the movie matches the overall paper aesthetic and reflects or supports the character’s physical or mental setting.
Finding My Song: By Bird is directed by Duval Lang, and designed, written and constructed by
Wendy Passmore. Stu MacQuarrie is the composer. Devon Dubynk and Wendy Passmore are the puppeteers/actors
and there have been many other contributing artists throughout the development process.
