”You Can’t Hurt Art!”
Quote from Jhan Groom at our Calgary Puppet Club for Adults workshop on January 28th as people worried about ‘doing it right!’
World Theatre Day
…was created in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). World Theatre Day is celebrated annually on the 27th March by ITI Centres and the international theatre community, to remind us of theatre’s significant contribution to the strengthening of understanding and peace among people. One of the most important of these is the circulation of the International Message traditionally written by a theatre personality of world stature at the invitation of the International Theatre Institute. The 2006 message was written by Mexican playwright Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda. For a copy of the 2006 International Message, please visit:
http://www.iti-worldwide.org/pages/wtd/wtd.htm
Here is an excerpt from the message… “The theatre moves, illuminates, disquiets, disturbs, lifts the spirit, reveals, provokes and violates conventions. It is a conversation shared with society. Theatre is the first art to confront emptiness, shadows and silence to make words, movement, lights and life surge forth.”
New Book!
Puppetry in Education and Therapy: Unlocking Doors to the Mind and Heart
In Puppetry in Education and Therapy: Unlocking Doors to the Mind and Heart, one finds enormous variety, ingenuity, and creativity in the types of puppets, and the ways they are used in education and in therapy. Puppeteers, therapists, and educators, articulate what is meant by “puppetry in education” and “puppet therapy” and how it is the same or different from “puppet theatre”. They describe the unique characteristics and theory of puppetry in education and therapy, the skills it takes to be successful in these areas, the skills that are passed on to people who use puppets for personal expression, and how to assess the impact of puppets on learning or behavior change.
